My favourite cafes - Auckland and Waiheke

  1. 1

Firstly, the quality of the coffee stand out in this cafe. A strong distinct flavor has been noticeable in every flat white i have had at there cafes. Available at the counter are freshly made brioche muffins baps and sandwich. There food has a very substantial quality to it - you can tell that only the best ingredients have been used.

Ben is a simple no fuss cafe. Every time i have stopped in Ben the coffee has been outstanding - never a milky or burned flat white. The interior is simple and the staff are friendly. Also, there is a sign hanging at the front of the cafe with my name on it.

Island thyme has a restaurant above it. The style of the cafe food has been influenced heavily by there professional chefs. Island thyme is always full of friendly Waiheke residents and travelers.

Delicious Doughnuts

  1. 1

There are many delicious reasons to visit Little & Friday but very high on the list is their amazing doughnuts. They've brought back the classic jam and cream doughnut covered in icing sugar and it has the most sublime taste and texture, exactly like the ones you remember from your childhood, except even better. The also bake a few other doughnut varieties and I'm always torn on choosing between chilli chocolate, banana caramel and cinnamon, each one is perfectly soft on the outside with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside. To top it off they will deliver a box of doughnuts to your doorstep - work morning tea anyone?

    Scratch Bakers HQ
    Auckland Central
Scratch Bakers is a must-visit if you're in the mood for a treat, they have some of the freshest and most delicious baking in the city. Among their impressive list of delights is their amazing doughnuts and the flavours list is pretty impressive including the likes of lemon curd, kiwifruit, cherry vanilla and cranberry. I love the chocolate espresso doughnut although it has quite a caffeine kick so go for the mini version if you want to try its tastiness but don't want the kick in the pants. Scratch is a CBD doughnut heaven and worth multiple visits.

Order a cream doughnut from Little Sister Cafe right now because this is one of the best places in Auckland to indulge in this classic Kiwi treat. I like to pull up a pew, get my laptop out and make the most of their free Wi-Fi while indulging in these incredible sweeties. Following on from the amazing doughnuts created at Salvation Kitchen, the owners have brought their unique blend of cream, homemade raspberry jam and doughy delectable, chewy, sugar 'n' cinnamon sprinkled goodies that are their delicious doughnuts. I love them because they are lip-smackingly good and one is never enough!

    Bluebells Cakery
    Hillsborough
Bluebells excel at baking that reminds you of your grandmother's best sweets but even better, and it's no surprise that their sublime cakes and treats have gained a huge following. Although if you haven't tried them yet make sure you sample the long cream doughnuts which are just like the old ones you remember growing up and perfectly baked to be fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of crispiness and sugar on the outside. They do quite a few varieties too, with salted caramel my definite fave.

    Al's Deli
    Auckland Central
Oh Al's Deli.. I've had your doughnuts on my mind all week! I must warn you, if you aren't decisive when it comes to choosing your sweet treats, you may be at Al's deciding on your dessert for a while. I walked away with three doughnuts - a snickers, nutella and black forest. I can't choose a favourite, but I will be back to try others and give the cronuts a go!

    Milse
    Auckland Central
My absolute favourite place for sweet treats, Milse juxtaposes its hole-in-the-wall size with mouthwatering and gorgeously presented desserts. From the macarons to miniature gautex selection, everything looks almost too good to touch, but several insta-worthy photos later you’re more than ready to dig in, and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is lovely too; watching the chef’s at work through their viewing window feels like an extra treat.

    Mellow
    Auckland Central
Mellow dessert café offers the perfect place to meet with friends and share a plate -or three-. From their cabinet selection of that day’s fresh baking to shaved ice served with fruit and froyo, there’s something that appeals to everyone with a sweet tooth and a mindset to try new treats. If green tea crepes and taro-shaved ice isn’t your cup of tea, the coffee and tea menu is really good too- their iced white chocolates are my new favourite things.

    Bluebells Cakery
    Hillsborough
Bluebells is a charming little place full of baking made with lots of love. Though tiny, their café has no shortage of sweets, and it always takes me forever to decide between their equally appealing cupcakes or slices or cakes, (and then between lemon, or red velvet, or salted caramel.) While heaps of cafes offer the same flavours, none have mastered the cozy appeal of Bluebells, everything reminds you a bit of home, of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

    13
It’s a good thing they offer loyalty cards because this place is seriously addictive. On top of the usual and not-so-usual ice cream flavours, like pineapple lump and jaffa, their milkshakes and “real” hot chocolates are amazing (peanut butter and oreo, anyone?). While you’re waiting for the careful construction of your order, the array of American candies that line the walls are very hard to resist browsing.

    Bluebells Cakery
    Eden Terrace
I loved their Hillsborough outlet, and somehow love this one even more. A much more spacious shop, there's plenty of room to sit- a good thing for them and not so good thing for me, because I ended up ordering another cupcake after the first! The banana and salted caramel one was delicious, with the perfect ratio of icing to cupcake, topped off prettily with banana chips and flowers, and the lemon curd cupcake was just as good, a little tangy and sticky, just the way lemon cake should be.

Sweetest Spots

    Miann
    Auckland Central
I've had a date with Miann in my diary for a few weeks now as it's hailed as one of Auckland's best dessert bar meccas. It's the hard work and a dream come true for passionate creator and head chef Brian Campbell and his wife Roselle and features a sumptuous array of desserts. It was so good, I went twice in a matter of days. The first time we stopped in to pick up donuts to munch on the way back to the car after a movie. But the second time was the full-on, sit down Miann experience and what an experience it was. I never knew anything could be better than cheesecake. But cheesecake inside a sugary strawberry balloon. Amazing!

Candy lovers look no further! If you want to feel like you've died and gone to a heavenly world dripped in sugar and full of colours, flavours and tantalising tastes, you need to pop your head in and say hi to the confectionary experts at this iconic Mt Eden local. There are so many different types of hard-to-find candies at this great Auckland sweet shop that an experience of visiting feels delightfully decadent and a little overwhelming. I love the fact that the guy behind the counter has worked here for six years and still hasn't tried every sweet in store.

    Milse
    Auckland Central
Every amazing thing you've heard about Milse is entirely true. Since its arrival in Britomart it has become a sweet tooth mecca and for many delicious reasons. Let's start with the patisseries which are utterly mouthwatering and comprise so many different kinds of pastries, tarts and creative delicacies you will have great difficulty choosing just one, although do try the roasted pear, apple and frangipane tart - it's a true delight! Milse also has the best selection of fresh macarons in Auckland, incredible handmade chocolates and clever gelato blends on sticks amongst its many other treats. Everything at Milse is presented in a beautiful way and the service is also impeccable, it really is a five star dessert experience and even offers a dessert degustation menu which is out of this world. If you haven't tried it yet, find any excuse to go as it's an absolute must.

A good mate of mine told me I hadn’t lived until I’d taking a trip to the Chocolate Boutique Cafe (once visited by then-US President Bill Clinton) and tried their chilli Italian denso, a thick hot chocolate that literally got my mouth watering before I’d even had a chance to taste it. The experience is like travelling to chocolate heaven but with a real zing. My companion tried the Mexican spice version and considered it to be just as delicious. This will be one of my go-to places come winter.

    Al's Deli
    Auckland Central
The doughnuts at Al’s Deli make me smile, not only because they taste delectably selfish but more importantly it’s about the fact that they are served up with personality plus. When we visited there was one creation you could inject with lemon meringue but I was swayed by the Bob Marley lyrics ("I Wanna Jam It With You") of their traditional jam and cream option. And don’t miss a date with the ribs or burgers here. $10 burger lunches on a Monday are a winner.

    Good One
    Ponsonby
I'm sure that I've recommended Good One before but this is a place I can't recommend enough. You automatically feel at home in the light filled space and there are a variety of options of where to sit - inside at the communal table, outside or in the half indoor, half outdoor entry area. The coffee is some of the best in the city, the small selection of cabinet food (pies, toasties etc) great and the service is friendly. If you haven't been, get amongst.

The Rabbit Hole Cafe is a great little cafe next to Bayfield Primary. Either sit in the poky interior or relax on the small deck and get some fresh air. We had the mince on toast served with a poached egg. The portion was generous and pretty dam tasty. Good coffee, good food and great staff. What’s not to like?

    Dizengoff
    Ponsonby
There’s nothing quite like starting the week with a stomach full of Dizengoff muesli. Served with a pile of fresh fruit, natural yoghurt and a generous drizzle of honey the meal feels like it’s doing your body a world of good. We sat outside and enjoyed the fresh air while lazily sipping on a couple of flat whites. With a start like this I’m not really sure why everyone has such an issue with Mondays?

    Queenies Lunchroom
    Freemans Bay
When I have kids I'll probably take them to Queenies and order them the boiled eggs with vegemite toast, with a fluffy of course (these come with copious chocolate buttons). In the weekend this is a hive of family activity and the staff are more than accommodating. Until then I'll just head along and have a coffee (it's good) and probably an almond croissant or something equally as flaky.

    Santos Cafe
    Ponsonby
Santos can hold down the coffees. In fact I’ve never had a bad coffee there, perfect extraction and silky milk. I hadn’t ever eaten there before though so I figured it was about time to give the menu the once over. I opted for the haloumi salad which was delicious. I’m a big fan of the salty fried cheese and this was cooked to perfection. The light meal was just what I was after. I’m looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu to see what other delights I can discover.
