Been to heaps of local gigs here over the years - some of which have gone on to big things. It seems this is where many begin. The venue is dark, dingy, dirty and damn perfect for an awesome night. Put on steel caps, a grin and get amongst it.

Throw on that leather jacket and your shiny new classic black Doc Marten’s, it’s time to get head out for a night at Whammy. You will know you are in the right place when you come across a bunch of super rad cats mulling around St Kevin’s arcade, having a cigarette between sets. This is most likely the band that’s playing tonight so now is not the time to get all cocky and have conversations about how good you are on your vintage Les Paul. In fact, maybe that’s something you should think about never bringing up in conversation. Swallow your pride and head down the stairs, you’re in for a wild night out.

K Rd grunge at her best and support bands just starting out

Last night Auckland based rock band Popstrangers played their final NZ show for a while at Whammy, and it was a winner. The night reminded me why Whammy Bar is one of my favourite places to watch live music in Auckland. The room was dark and hot, the beers cheap and the music loud. After emerging from downstairs, my shirt was pretty much soaked through with sweat but it didn’t matter, what else was I to expect?

Last chance to see Popstrangers before they go overseas in a couple of weeks! Also playing is Pikachunes and Trust Punks, both great local indie pop bands at a bangin' venue. WHEN Friday 5/4/2013 COST $5 on the door

The Gunslingers Ball presents a night of rock and roll. Featuring The Hollow Grinders, New Zealand's best instrumental surf band, Night Choir, dirty country with Bernie Griffen and his Grifters. Plus more hot, fresh and hungry new acts, it’s going to be a night to remember. Friday 15th Feb

It’s been a year since Thee Oh Sees wowed Kiwi audiences with their insane, hectic and cacophonous live show and now they are returning on the back of their stunning new release Putrifiers II. With a prolific reputation for their immense output, Thee Oh Sees return to Auckland to deliver tight psychedelic jams and an unrestrained live show at everyone's favourite local music venue, Whammy Bar. This may be your last chance to catch Thee Oh Sees at such an intimate venue, so don't snooze on this!

Always great music at Whammy bar. If you like being surrounded by nice friendly people who enjoy good music then you have to check it out. huge range too so even the most particular musos will find something they like

Always an interesting selection of bands from indie pop and electro through to metal and punk. Check out brand new bands playing their first shows through to popular local acts and underground international acts. Most nights end up with dancing til the early hours, whether there's a dj or just the house music. It's a nicely sized venue with plenty of comfy and dimly lit seating areas. Drinks range from cheap cans of Bear Beer through to the bar manager's family's artisan cider in apple or fejoa.

Great place downstaiirs in St Ke vins that has anecclectic mix of live music playing so often, and some of the best gigs I've been to in Ak. Worth a visit if you've never been...stays open very late if you're up for a good night out
