Tanuki Sushi and Sake Bar is an Izakaya style restaurant where the Japanese chefs prepare the food in front of you. Towards the back of the restaurant there is a Zashiki area where you can take your shoes off and have a small private party.

Do not be disappointed if you can not get a seat in Tanuki's Cave, the food upstairs is superb and is made to be shared. Let us not forget that sake is a good lubricator and with over 20 to choose from you will have the conversion flowing in no time.

If you're looking to grab a bite in town with some good mates, you can't go past Tanuki's. It's a firm favourite for many many years. A lot has to do with it's location (near Event Cinemas and Comedy Club). It's the perfect place to eat some sushi or tempura before or after a show. It's not as cramp or hot as Tanuki's Cave which is a big plus.

Tanuki's Sake Bar is a good second best if the cave downstairs has a massive waiting time or if you're with a bigger group. The set menu's are really nice if you're with a large group and not sure what to order or like to try a bit of everything.

Great to go with a group. Been there for ages and always delivers.

Tanuki's Cave is my number one favorite place to grab a bite in Auckland. Be it a date night, a group, or a quick feed before or after a show, you are guaranteed to get well priced, tasty food. Yakatori style Japanese food, the cabbage with mayo is practically an Auckland institution. Two of us can leave satisfied and full for $60 including drinks.  The only thing you have to remember is that they don't take bookings, so if it's busy, be prepared to cue - it's worth it.

I don't know many Aucklanders who haven't eaten - or at least queued to eat - at Tanuki.  The restaurant upstairs is nice but what you really want is the cave under street level.  It's dark and noisy - people crammed in around tiny wall tables or at the bar  or if you're really lucky at one of the few large tables.  The food is tasty and plentiful - the grilled rice balls are a personal favourite.  You want to get in early though because they don't take bookings.
