Western Springs is a beautiful park which is an excellent place to either have a picnic or take a scroll and see the little duckies and swans. If your looking for a weekend out with the family, Western Springs has it all. We took a group of senior citizens to the park and they truly enjoyed it very much.

This is a great spot to let your littlies run around and have a bit of open space. There's a pretty good playground that is easily accessed from the zoo carpark. There are also a lot of ducks/swans etc. This can sometimes mean you have to watch where you step, but still fun to take some old bread to feed them. It's close to MOTAT and the zoo, and pretty central. Western Springs also hosts Pasifika once a year, which is a great festival to attend.
This is a beautiful spot in Auckland, during Spring especially, as there are lots of baby ducks, geese and swans to see. We sometimes get takeaways from nearby in Grey Lynn, and head here to eat them - it's a really nice spot for dinner. They have a great children's playground, plus a lake that you can walk around in about 15 mins, which is a really nice little walk to do.
