Another triumph of a meal from the clever kitchen team at The Refreshment Room. While the boys had the signature scotch with smashed potatoes and a big handful of rocket from the Titirangi restaurant’s on-site garden, I was rewarded for an adventurous choice - light, pillowy cappelletti encasing a braised beef and spinach filling with pancetta atop and a pumpkin purée underneath. Accompanied with a glass of Martinborough rose, it was a divine Sunday night!
Best place in the West for a date night or a meal with friends for a special occasion. The food and wine here are out of this world. I've tried a lot of amazing meals, and I've come to the conclusion that red meat is what they do best. My husband can't go past the steak, but if there's slow-cooked meat on the menu when you visit, I say go for that - it never fails to melt in the mouth. Having said that, I was vegetarian when I first started coming here and I liked it then, too! The events are great, I've been to a couple of 40ths in the Red Room, which is a great venue - and I've been to a couple of gigs here too. The owners know their market and have created a very special place that Westies would be lost without!
Ever tried snapper cappelletti? I hadn’t until I dined at The Refreshment Room on Saturday evening and I was so interested as to what this kind of pasta is that I had to Google it in anticipation of my meal (it’s a cousin to tortellini in case you didn’t know!). And what a dinner it was - light twists of pasta, encasing a minced-up filling of fresh snapper and topped with a creamy sauce, mint, broad beans and Parmesan. Amazingly good! We dined at $65 per head as part of a two-course set menu. And my goodness it was good value. Don’t miss the cocktails too - $16 for a top-shelf passion fruit mojito.
If you want to eat rustic Italian dishes full of seasonal, local produce picked directly from the garden, all in front of a roaring fire then my favourite Auckland restaurant, The Refreshment Room, is the place to dine at this winter. It's one of the best restaurants in town in my opinion because every mouthful is a flavour explosion and there's a real buzz about this place. Plus when the rain is lashing at the window panes, there's something quite delightful about being perched high in the Waitakere Ranges, feasting on some of the best dishes in town.
