After heaps of mates highly recommended The Chip Shop in Royal Oak, I finally checked it out last week. My only regret is that I have been wasting my time and hard-earned money on other fish and chips takeaways all these years. There is just NO comparison between fresh fish that's floured, battered and fried in sizzling hot oil right in front of your eyes and chips that have been made from potatoes that were still in the ground less than a week ago when you consider that a majority of takeaways just buy in frozen chips and pre-cook their fish which sits around in its soggy batter in the fridge for hours before it's re-fried when you place your order. These guys have it down to a fine art, that's for sure.....and the best part? They don't charge an arm and a leg for it either! They have up to an hour's wait on Fridays and Saturdays, but you can place a phone order in advance (they have a downloadable/printable menu on their website). I love the open kitchen plan which lets customers see exactly how their order is being carried out . Honestly, it was an example of a superbly coordinated team effort and everyone working to a grand plan, each one contributing their bit towards creating parcel after parcel of delicious fish and chips. How none of them bumped into each other or dropped anything or made some monumental cock up as they rushed about trying to keep to the timing, attending phone calls, serving customers, cleaning up, handling the cash register, putting up orders and fetching and carrying various items is an on-going miracle in itself! And this is my point exactly....though these guys seem to make it look totally effortless, it obviously takes a huge amount of dedication and an uncompromising attitude towards quality to be able to produce such huge volumes of freshly cooked food week after week, year after year. So congratulations, well done, and may your tribe increase! ;-)
I'm from the UK, have been travelling around this gorgeous country for a few months now and I've had more fish and chips from various takeouts across New Zealand than I care to count. :-) I would rate The Chip Shop in Auckland as the very best in the land, without a doubt. It was such an awesome experience in every way... the owner and his wife were so friendly and hospitable... they filled up my water bottle, drew a detailed map to help me find my way to the place I was headed, let me off a few cents rather than make me break a big bill and gave me some excellent tips to catch some last minute experiences before I left NZ. It was a busy night in their shop and while I sat and waited I was absolutely impressed by the courteous way they treated all their customers, greeting everyone when they walked in and saying bye when they left... it's these little gestures that lift a hospitality operator from mediocre to five star. And all this before I even tasted the food.... which was to die for. Both the fish and the chips were done to perfection and salted just right. I read on their menu that they get their fish fresh from the market everyday and that they make their own chips on site, which partially explains what makes their food taste so yummy. They richly deserve all the awards they've won over the years for the quality of their food.... all they need is for someone to award them a prize for their superlative service. :-) The meal was one of the most memorable I had anywhere in New Zealand and I will always be thankful for this awesome couple's genuine friendliness to a stranger who walked in on a cold winter's night.
