Muriwai is a long, black sand beach with wild surf. There are plenty of waves for surfing or just frolicking in the sea. It's not NZ's most beautiful beach but there's plenty of room to park up in the soft sand and only 30mins from the city.

Muriwai beach is a stunning rugged windswept west coast beach. It has a few of my  favorite walks with amazing views. Great day out with the family as there are quite a few picnic areas - although the beach is only recommended for competent swimmers (not young children) but Im sure playing on the beach will make up for it!  One thing not to miss is the gannet colony at Otakamiro Point, one of only three mainland gannet colonies in New Zealand. The best time to visit the gannets is between October and February. Great opportunity  for photographers. Lets not forget a favorite spot for kite surfers and wind surfers and the nearby woodhill forest!

This beach has so much to offer where do I start!  It is a great beach that is definitely worth the drive out.  There are many walks and the highlight is going and seeing the gannet colony.I could spend ages watching them.  Definitely take your binoculars and camera.   The beach is beautiful! In summer the sand gets so hot on your feet and the tides can be very strong so be very careful to not drift away from the flags as it can be easy to do! This beach is really great to take friends from over seas to or anyone who hasn't been.  :)
