Heard about this place from others and went their for lunch. We waited a little while because we were part of a large group but the food tasted great and was fresh.

I had serious food envy here. Everyone else's food looked AMAZING. But I ordered grasshoppers thinking it would be some like mild 'learner' buritto. Silly me. My mistake. But honestly I will 100% be coming back here.

I had heard about this place from The Food Truck tv show and as I love Mexican food really wanted to try it. There wasn't a table available when we arrived, so I thought we'd be in for a very long wait and my heart sunk - but not so! While I had a quick browse in the second hand book shop next door, my husband had secured a table and in less than 5 minutes our food started to arrive! My husband who didn't understand what the fuss about Mexican food suddenly got it! Enough said. Though the portions weren't huge, they were surprisingly filling and everything tasted great!

I really don’t want to tell the world about Mexican specialties either! I know I’m not the only one to want this to be my own little secret, but this pace is too good. Mad, kitschy decor, part dia de Los muertos meets Sarah’s bedroom in the Labyrinth movie. They have pinatas! But the best reason to come here is something that a lot of people try to do but don’t do well, the humble taco. A beef taco from these guys is elevated beyond street food into total food heaven. Like the sweet religious artifacts aplenty at mexican specialties, you’ll have an epiphany. I’d come here every day if I lived closer. Yum!

I was going to write a review, but your one pretty much said it all! The only thing is, they're not even open everyday. Something like Thurs-Sat 10-3....

If you've ever paid more than $20 for a Mexican dish when dining out and thought you could've done just as well yourself with an Old El Paso kit at home, it's time to try Mexican Specialities. With all sorts of dishes that you probably haven't even heard of and mostly under $15, it's great value and very satisfying. If you want a drink to go with your food, the juices or hot chocolate are pretty special too. And if you feel inspired to venture beyond Tex-Mex supermarket kits, the store has plenty of ingredients for you to buy and try in your own kitchen. My only complaint about Mexican Specialities (and I'm sure most will agree with me) is that it's only open Thu-Sat, and quite often very crowded - but it's still very much worth the visit.

The only bad thing is that they aren't open 7 days a week but thats also what makes them so unique and special! The food is amazing, always fresh and tasty, i think i've tried everything on their menu and loved it all. Maria and Jose are a lovely couple, very funny and their kids are soo cute too, great family owned business that i know will be going for years to come. Great advice on what to purchase when making a mexican inspired meal, all the products are fairly priced considering they come from Mexico, and never had anything bad. LOOOOVE the chocolate and fig cake!!!!

I've never been to Mexico. I don't know what's 'authentic' etc. But this place serves delicious food different to anywhere else in the city, with a really nicely unpretentious atmosphere. Yum. Bookstore next door is awesome too,

I wish this place was closer to me - I'd eat there every week if it were. Enlightening, authentic and simple Mexican food from a small menu, as well as shelves loaded with Mexican foodstuffs - take your pick from about 30 different chilli sauces. Definietly recommend buying some 'Magic Powder' to take home - it transforms bland foods like rice, eggs or potatoes with a nice little kick. Can they please extend their opening hours, or open somewhere central, soon!?

Amazing Mexican food. None of the other "Mexican" restaurants in Auckland come close to this one. Be prepared to wait for seating as it is a small place but let me tell you: WORTH IT! While there shop for the goodies you can use your own kitchen including hand made tortillas!

I have been here before but this morning was the best. It can be quite disconcerting - at times you feel like you have stumbled into a family home in the middle of a garage sale.  Making it to the counter is always an exercise in perseverance, but there is a good reason why they are so popular.  Dammit they are good. There is plenty to look at while you wait to order - goat's milk caramel topping seemed too good to overlook and there are plenty of other yummy things to buy as they import from Mexico and sell on to you.  There is a real authenticity to this cafe and I cannot recommend it enough. The tacos are good - and try the Mexican coke.  It's different, in a good way.

The reason the Mexican Coke is so great is because they use natural cane sugar for sweetening, and not high fructose corn syrup. I am in agreement with everything you say. Always.
