Jailhouse totally rules. What other backpackers do you know of that is housed in an old jail? This place is awesome and has a whole load of history. I particularly love the cleanliness about this place and the fun things you can do whilst you’re staying there.

Quite possibly the most popular backpackers in Canterbury, Jailhouse is the best accommodation for travellers on a budget for many reasons. Firstly, the accommodation is in a real life jail, secondly the reception is always full of friendly faces and thirdly their amenities are second to none, and even include a café serving the Addington Jailhouse coffee beans!

What do a lunatic asylum, a prison and backpacker accommodation have in common? They have all shared the same Neo Gothic building in Addington – just not at the same time. Built in 1874 by Christchurch’s preeminent architect Benjamin Mountford, the building started life as a women’s prison in the city’s now up-and-coming suburb, and saw 60,409 prisoners pass through its doors. Decommissioned in 1999, the prison was reformed into the Jailhouse Accommodation in 2006.
