Part of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, Whakanewha Bay (also known as Rocky Bay) is a beautiful bay on the lesser visited western side of Waiheke Island. The sheltered beach is a popular spot for swimming, picnics and kayaking with a small shop, sailing club and a couple of holiday homes and campsites nearby.

Surrounded by the Whakanewha Regional Park, there are various walking tracks which take you past pohutakawa and native wildlife to a series of stunning cascading waterfalls.

Stop off at the historic pā site and enjoy panoramic views over the bay to Auckland city.

Collecting pipis on this beach is my absolutely favourite thing to do. I go at low tide, of course, and it’s a great way to experience the natural beauty as well as get a bit of a feed. There's also a fantastic walk called the Cascade One-Hour that is really beautiful. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Waiheke Island.
