The Mexican Cafe had been recommended to me by many people and I finally got there the other night with my partner. It was busy and buzzing on a Wednesday night and we sat out on the warm enclosed balcony. I had a Vege Burrito and my partner a taco salad. They were large meals with lots of fresh veges, not too spicy and really nice. The waiting staff were friendly and the nacho chips to start with is a nice touch. We also tried a couple of cocktails on the menu - a Mojito and a pomegranate caipiroska special. I found the whole dining experience truly enjoyable.
This is my favouritest place in Auckland. Start out or end up here for a fun night out. Great Mexican food, great bar and great prices. If you go between 5pm - 7pm they have Happy Hour so stock up on those fantastic margaritas in the cute jug with a straw.. grab two I normally do. They open for lunch from noon. and for dinner from 5 p.m. They have 40 food choices and over 80 different Tequilas, 18 beers, 35 wines, cocktails plus more....There is live music some nights from 11pm.. The place has a real Mexican buzz to it. Once seated you get complimentary corn chips & salsa ( I love free stuff) to nibble while pondering the oh so yummy menu. We usually have the Burritos or Fajitas. All I can say is yum. I love this place....
Their chimichangas are great and the complimentary bowl of corn chips and salsa is a nice touch. Most of the food can be adjusted to suit your taste for spice, so this is a great place for all chilli fiends out there. The decor really looks like a mexican dive (in the best sense of the word) and the staff are quick and pleasant. As with many of the good CBD restaurants it's best to call and book for weekend dinners, though they generally only book for larger groups, it's well worth waiting at the bar for a table though if you drop in as a twosome to a packed restaurant. They do not have a public holiday surcharge so keep them in mind when the next stat rolls around and you don't feel like slaving in the kitchen on your day off!
