Great place, is always busy on any day. Love the food.

I can't count how often we go there....The food is simply awesome.

There are now three restaurants in the Sri Mahkota chain (Epsom, Grafton and East Tamaki), but the Torrens St branch is the the original restaurant which has been the destination for Malaysian food enthusiasts for many years. With the franchise in place, the tattered well thumbed menus have given way to shiny laminated pictorial ones, and the decor has been stepped up a notch. Sri Mahkota has a lunch menu (with rice and noodle dishes, mostly priced at around $12), and a extensive dinner menu, focusing on dishes using traditional Malaysian spices and flavours such as sambal, belacan, assam (tararind) and coconut milk. There are two dishes which Sri Mahkota is famous for, - fish noodle soup ($20) a massive serving (enough for 2 or even 3 people) thick vermicelli noddles in fish soup with fresh fish pieces and chinese cabbage. The soup is sublime. Nestum prawns ($27) is sweet, spicy, chewy and crunchy all at the same time, and absolutely delicious. The char kuey teow ($16 for dinner size or $12 lunch size) has excellent flavour. It pays to book, and the East Tamaki branch is BYO with $5 corkage.
