The savvy dudes behind Ponsonby Social Club, namely Sharr Bezarti, Rodney Gower, Bobby Brazuka and Tony McGeorge, have created a wicked late night eatery to soak up all that excess booze in the most pleasurable way possible.
Being responsible has never been so tasty, with American diner classics like pumpkin pie, cheese and bacon burgers and deep fried pickles on offer late into the night. Never fear herbivores! You will not go home drunk and hungry, either with a range of warming soups and an outstanding three cheese lasagna.

There aren’t enough American diner-style eateries round these parts in my opinion, but one near me that is pretty perfect is the Late Night Diner on Ponsonby Road. The menu isn’t all the usual diner fare, but it is very much present in dishes like popcorn grits, the Reuben sandwich and the meaty goodness that is the cheese and bacon burger. Diner food taken up a notch, and with a well stocked bar to keep things humming.
Love this place. Not convinced some items on the menu are that great, or that they’re very good value for money but you can’t go wrong with a burger, fries and a beer, that’s for sure. The hot sauce collection is on point too! The guy at the bar told me, “This one (pictured) tastes like a mongrel and it’s hot as hell”
I have been to Late Night Diner twice now and it is a great place for simple yet hearty nostalgic comfort food. The Door Stop Sandwich is just that, two great hunks of sourdough oozing with a cheesy filling(I recommend slathering it with mustard), and the vegetable soup is a perfect accompaniment and a good dose of greens. My dining partner had the Fish Fingers which were made in house and served with a tasty tartare sauce.
This week the owners of Ponsonby Social Club opened an American style diner called the Late Night Diner, and I couldn’t be more happy! We sat at the breakfast bar style counter and watched the inexperienced staff get told off. The lack of experience was made up for by the food. I tucked into the fried chicken with bbq sauce and the bacon croquettes accompanied by a bourbon hard shake. It was all delicious. And the best news? It’s open till 2am from Weds to Sat. I’ll be back.
I’ve been to the Late Night Diner three times in the past couple of weeks to stop in for some dessert. They don’t have a huge range of sweets but I’m a sucker for their American style treats, like the butternut pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream, which is delicious and slightly on the tart side. My recommendation is the chocolate peanut butter fondant, it’s hard to go past the gooey centre and warm baked chocolate goodness!
Late Night Diner on Ponsonby Road is a rad addition to the Ponsonby scene. Incredible burgers and milkshakes make you feel like you're hanging in a burger bar on Hollywood Blvd, the only thing missing is the American accents - but you'll move past that when you try the deep fried oreo doughnuts - which are INCREDIBLE!
