It’s easy to take the City Gallery for granted when you’ve lived in Wellington for a while, but the fact is, it’s excellent. The variety of exhibitions, the expertise of the staff, and the frequent lectures and events make it a great way to exercise your mind on a lazy afternoon – and the adjoining Cafe Nikau is the perfect place to refuel afterwards. As part of the gallery’s recent push for greater engagement with patrons, it’s been running competitions on Instagram and holding karaoke nights, too.

Last few days of Gregory Crewdson, get along and see it.

I love going to this beautiful building to look at their beautiful artwork. They have a great selection of contemporary works by both local and international artists. Their Nikau Cafe is amazing too.

There are always so many amazing exhibitions on and all for free. Great place to go on a lunch break.

City Gallery’s exhibitions always wow, and change regularly so there’s always something exciting and new from local or international artists - and usually free. Pop into Nikau next door for a bite or a drink pre or post-show.

Restored building which hosts the city collections as well as various touring exhibitions

A revolving door of impressive exhibits by international and well-known local artists, this free gallery in Civic Square is best enjoyed with regular visits. Whether stopping in on a rainy afternoon or making a point to see Len Lye's kinetic sculptures before they vanished, Wellington's City Gallery provides thought-provoking entertainment time and time again. Multiple exhibit spaces span two floors, and the gallery plays an accommodating host for writers and other speakers with a generous but cosy amphitheater. Just remember to recharge with a flat white and a donut from the Nikau Cafe located on the ground floor of the gallery before you leave.

On a characteristically wet and windy day, a pleasant space to explore is the City Gallery, found in the heart of Wellington, by the Civic Square. I don’t have an extensive knowledge of art, but I’ve always found the City Gallery to be welcoming. It’s also often free! In one of its spacious exhibition rooms I encountered a piece by New Zealand artist Glen Hayward. He had reconstructed Neo’s cubicle from The Matrix. Entirely in wood. Even the files on the desk. Even the computer. Everything. In wood. The Gallery rewards wandering, and returning.
