In less than 24 hours Team Gallagher will be underway in their bid to become the first Kiwi team to row from Sydney to Auckland using the two harbour bridges as start and finish lines. As they make their final preparations and pack the last few items into their boat, the Moana, a few nervous thoughts will also be setting in.
Steve Gates, a member of the Australian quartet that rowed from Hokianga to Sydney in 31 days in 2007 sent Team Gallagher a few words of advice:
Have Fun
Remember to smile and no matter how bad a day, tomorrow the sun comes up, the weather will be great and it will be a brilliant day: not too hot and not too cold. There’ll be heaps of food, the rowing will chill out and tick along, you're going to feel great, and you're going to see stuff that very few people will ever see, plus get great abs and be a chick magnet (personally I find the latter helps, my wife would agree!). Even if you wake up and find it wrong, then all you have to do is get through the day and tomorrow will be great.
Trust me eventually it has to be right.
