Perfect getaway with world-class hosts
This past weekend, I stayed at Lone Kauri Lodge for the second time in 2 years. I chose to return this time because I wanted to go someplace close to central Auckland that felt like it was worlds away. I also chose to return because the beautiful hill-side location and the lodge' hosts, Ann and Keith, are so stellar.
Lone Kauri Lodge is nestled deep in the bush high above the Tasman Sea, above Karekare. The lodge itself is modern and perfectly appointed. It includes a large private guest lounge and two guest bedrooms. The lounge has comfy couches and chairs, a dining table, a fridge, and plenty of books and movies, which can be viewed on the lounge's TV or in your room.
Down a long corridor off the lounge are two lovely rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms that tout beautiful sinks and showers. The linens are fine quality and the beds are comfortable. The larger of the two rooms has a private door onto the large deck. This deck leads to a spa built into the hill several metres above the house. It's situated in the bush like a little gem of privacy, particularly good for stargazing.
The continental breakfast by itself is generous, with Keith's homemade muesli, toast, jams, and heaps of cut fruit. For a small extra charge, you can also enjoy a fully cooked breakfast. It's a big breakfast, with bacon, eggs, roasted tomatoes, sausages, mushrooms, baked beans, and hash browns.
All of those features and amenities are fine by themselves, but it's Ann and Keith who make the whole experience something special. They excel at making you feel instantly at home. They are great conversationalists and interesting people, and they're keen to make sure your stay is a good one.
This is one of the few places I've discovered in New Zealand that I want to go back to on a regular basis. It's very special.
