The seaweed-covered shipwreck peeping out of the ocean is enough to excite even the dullest imagination. The ship beached itself in the 1800s and you can still see part of its hull and an oar mover anchored in the sand. At low tide you can go a look at them up close. Aside from the shipwreck this is a stunning Far North beach to visit with the long sweeping 90 mile beach and calm waters ready to entertain you. The nearby campground is run by the local iwi and open over the holiday season so you can sleep on the doorstep to paradise.

The cleanest surf break in Northland, and arguably beyond. Its best waves are over winter, but beware the nearest campground is usually closed for the off-season. (But who needs it?) You can still see the mast from which the beach took its name.
