The view from the top of Mount Maunganui Summit Track is stunning - definitely worth the hike up.
From the top you get spectacular views of the beach, the inner harbour and port, Matakana Island and ships coming and going through the small harbour entrance.
It takes approximately 40 minutes to get to the top, depending on what route is taken. There are several tracks, but the two tracks recommended for sightseers are the Oruahine and Waikorire.
This is by far one of my favourite things to do in Tauranga. No matter how bad my day has been, it’s impossible not to feel better after a walk abound Mauao (its Maori name). The view across the water is reviving and the track is a moderate 35 minute walk that gets your heart going if you walk fast enough (helps even more if you’re pushing a pram). It’s not uncommon to reward myself with an ice cream from Copenhagen Cones or gelato from Monte Gelato after the walk.
OK it’s time to get out from under the duvet, take off the trackpants and Ugg boots and put on the walking shoes. Spring is the time to get out of the house and get some fresh air and relish the change of seasons. So what better way to get the blood flowing again than with the best walk in the bay; the Mount Maunganui Summit Track. I won’t go on about because everyone know this famous walk, and, well, you know where to find… up Mount Maunganui of course.
