It may only be a one-off event, but how can you go past Mister D’s and Monica Loves – Goats Head Soup extravaganza on Sunday June 28, a night of fun and frolicking as part of the Hawke’s Bay winter F.A.W.C. Food & Wine Classic. Pure Moroccan styled on the street stalls of Marakesh – tagines, pastilla and Mister D’s very own goat’s head soup.

Mister D is a hotspot for food addicts. Try the trio of chocolate sheets, milk, white and salted caramel semi-freddo or a ginger beer crème caramel, poached rhubarb and gingerbread, an apple tart tartin or the date tart, macadamian brittle and lemon curd. For smaller options choose from the sweet treat menu – maybe baked sugar pastry, nougat, moonshine biffs or the ”off the planet” doughnuts that come with a syringe armed with an extra squeeze of chocolate, jelly or custard.

New York style with a simple, but sophisticated menu and wine list to match. My favourite tends to be the braised duck risotto with wilted spinach, currants and pine nuts, followed by the trio of chocolate sheets, milk, white and salted caramel semi-freddo. The coffee is good and the doughuts come with a syringe armed with an extra squeeze of chocolate, jelly or custard are beyond comprehension. You can’t go wrong.
