Ben Gusto is a great addition to Browns Bay. I love to come and get a great coffee and one of their delicious slices, and sit outside and look at the scenery - it's nice to have a view, rather than face into the busy street. I've also been here for their incredible waffles - great sunday breakfast spot. I'm yet to try the gelato but from the looks of it, everyone seems to be big fans.
Meet a group of friends at Ben Gustos where it was packed inside (to the point where you had to breathe in to get past some of the tables) and absolutely bucketing outside. It was quite loud inside which meant staff needed to ask you to repeat your order. Perhaps due to the cafe being packed to capacity it took a little while for our orders to come to the table of which there was a mix up of the drinks which left the staff huffing. That I found slightly unprofessional. I had ordered a soy hot chocolate which compared to other cafes was pretty average. One of my friends daughter had ordered the waffles of which was very impressive looking. However scattered throughout one of the flavours of ice cream was coffee beans which for a kid probably not so good. The toilets was nice and clean which was nice.
We came here because it was one of the only places open in themorning and consequently it was humming. The decor and music were a little too Jazz focussed for my taste but the husband liked it a lot. Immediately noted the kids play area - which although tiny - had books and toys and got the wee lads attention straight away. We ordered our coffees and hot chocolates and then sat down with the menus to decide - it is counter service which we only knew because we asked - there may have been a sign but I was chasing kids and didn't spot one. The breakfast menu is standard fare - all eggs and bacon and holladaise etc. the kids menu was longer than usual but seemed to be the same as the adults anyway. I ordered two variations on scrambled eggs for me an the four year old - mmine with musnrooms, his with bacon, When they came out his was noticeably larger than mine - and cost less so that was weird. We ordered the kids hash brown meal for the other wee lad and it was yuck - the hash browns were straight from frozen (not unusual) but fried to tasteless oily-ness and the rest was blah. The waffles menu got my husbands attention and he ordered a chocolate one that came out with so much ice-cream, choclate sauce and cream on it that I went into lactose shock just looking at it - but he declared it delicious! (and he wouldnt share so it must have been good!) the only thing was it came out way after our meals had been served and were nearly finished so that was frustrating for him - the counter staff should say that because they are specialty items they take a bit longer etc Coffee was avaerage - another place where - even when specified that it was a hot chocolate for a kid it came out in a grown ups glass and piping hot.... We sat out the back - and I would recommend it - the view to the beach is relaxing and there is a playground across the road. The playground was FILTHY and strewn with empty bottles and rubbish from somebodies big drinking session (or a series of these sessions) the night before - that my husband cleaned up before we let the kids play - he filled six supermarket rubbish bags with bottles and condom wrappers and grossness - but that is not the cafes problem obviously! perhaps the surrounding shops and cafes could talk to the council about regular cleaning up of that area though....
