Where to shop for vintage clothing

Clockwise from top left: The King and I, The Bread and Butter Letter and Dead Man Vintage.

Shopping for vintage clothing isn't for everyone. It takes a reasonable amount of dedication and perseverance to find the gems, and even more to find them in your size. But when you do, it's mighty satisfying! Auckland's a treasure trove of vintage finds, so if you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, target these spots.

SaveMart Northcote loved by Maria G.

I go to Savemart very often as I can find amazing vintage and second hand clothes, shoes, clothes, bags and more at awesome prices. The store is very well coordinated according to sizes, type of clothes and colours! I recently bought a super vintage bag at only $10 - my friends cannot believe it. Most importantly it opens on Sundays until 5pm!

Tatty's Designer Recycle - Ponsonby loved by Helene R.

As well as being a good spot for hunting vintage bargains and great steals, Tatty’s on Ponsonby Road is the perfect destination post- a really good closet clean out. They will cast an expert eye over your cast-offs, and if you’re lucky take them in store and sell them on your behalf. Easier than a garage sale any day!

Fuzzy Vibes Junction loved by Charlotte R.

Fuzzy Vibes is my go to for 60's and 70's clothes - lurex, wild floral prints, maxi dresses and they have an especially good range of men's shirts. I have picked up many a fabulous swimsuit and there is a plethora of great accessories including tooled bags, oversize sunglasses and character jewellery.

Dead Man Vintage loved by Asher W.

Dead Man Vintage in Grey Lynn is my favourite vintage shop in Auckland. Regular trips to America means that the owner has a small but quality assortment of vintage tees, jackets and other items. I bought a Hanson tee there yesterday. The ironic/iconic tee, from 1991, is in great worn condition and was reasonable at $30. Go get your hipster on.

The Bread and Butter Letter loved by Eleanor B.

I am so excited that this fabulous store has come to K'Rd. The Bread and Butter letter is wickedly twee, packed with handmade local products and well curated vintage. Beware, you will covet just about everything in this store - but what a fabulous way to support local!

The King And I loved by Emily S.

This store is a must visit for all your quirky and vintage pieces. They have everything from clothes and shoes to desks and vintage plates. Everything is really well priced! The lady who runs it is very nice and friendly and don't be afraid to bargain with her! Definitely a store to visit if you are looking for a great vintage dress, a present for someone or an amazing piece for your home. A definite must visit.

Op Shop - Cheap As Chips loved by Charlotte R.

Cheap As Chips is huge and literally crammed with clothing from the odd vintage forties and fifties dresses to modern designer clobber. The prices vary but are often reasonable. They cater for women and men and there is a plethora of shoes, ties, bags, hats, sunglasses - you name it.

Search & Destroy loved by Sarah I.

Search & Destroy owner Tony Downing is reputed to be one of K Rd's best collectors of vintage items, and he continues to skilfully curate one of the finest shops in town. Every item sells at $5 or $10, with the odd pricier piece thrown in (it's always worth it). Everything's cheap, everything's gold - exactly what you want in a secondhand store.

Viva La Vintage in Devonport needs to be added to this great list.
