Back in the day, Mexican food in Auckland meant nachos and sour cream. Don’t get me wrong, I love that calorific treat as much as the next person, but I’m pleased that Aucklanders now have more options when it comes to Mexican food.
Two great Mexican restaurants are taking part in this year’s Auckland Restaurant Month, and both of them will be offering special deals to diners throughout the month of August.
Known for its extensive selection of tequila, many different flavours of margarita, Little Mexico Cantina is an authentic gem of a restaurant. They have a range of simple, tasty Mexican food – enchiladas, tortillas, burritos – even a Mexican vegetarian burger! It’s cheap (around $15 for a main) and very cheerful, and even does lunch Wednesday through Friday. They will be offering two set menus throughout Auckland Restaurant Month; one is $72 for two, and one for is $90 for two (this one includes drinks).
Jalapeno's Mexican Grill is also participating in Auckland Restaurant Month. This is another very authentic Mexican joint (the owners are Mexican) and has some great food on offer. Their homemade corn tortillas have been given some rave reviews from friends of mine, as have the home made guacamole and horchata (a traditional Mexican drink). This is primarily a lunch venue, but the restaurant is open til 9pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
The will be offering a $31 set menu during Auckland Restaurant Month, which has options like tacos, enchiladas and grilled pineapple with cinnamon and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce.
