The lightning tracker at WeatherWatch.co.nz is detecting dozens of thunderstorms around western Waikato and west of the Waitakere Ranges.
It's possible there may be isolated wind damage as a result of squalls. We also have low to moderate confidence of a possible isolated tornado in these two regions.
This is the leading front - behind it will be a mixture of sunny spells and squalls (the squally may not arrive to Auckland and Waikato until later in the day).

Nooo! It has to be sunny on Saturday for the save tvnz7 funeral march up queen st. Or is it that mother earth is angry that our nice children are going to lose the only free-to-air channel with nice documentaries that will inform then to treat outr planet better and no advertising? Probably.
Well looks like at this point they got that one completely wrong again well in all the areas Ive been in any way west and south Auckland. Lets hope it stays away for the weekend as well.
the real big problem at the moment for people on the highways , that is all areas south of Hamilton is Black Ice . many Aucklanders on long road trips have never experienced Black Ice , the desert road is notorious for icy conditions . The best thing is ot to travel that road but take the alternative route via National Park .In the South Island never guess the weather conditions always travel with blankets and snow chains .
