When Gail Batten came back from a woofing (working on organic farms) holiday a year ago, she was given some fertilised eggs as a farewell present.
When she arrived back in Auckland she borrowed a hen from a friend of hers to sit on the eggs. A few weeks later they hatched baby chicks. In December last year she obtained more fertilised eggs and now the chook house is full of life, eggs and entertainment.
So pop along and listen to Gail share her expertise on how to have chickens in the city. See Mt Eden backyard chickens in their free range environment.
The workshop will share with you:
- Benefits of having chickens
- Housing requirements and rules
- Feeding
- Hatching and rearing
- Health and wellbeing
- All about eggs
- Miscellaneous and troubleshooting
- Benefits of different breeds
- How to adopted a chicken
There is a limited number for each workshop. If you are interested in this workshop email judith@mountedenvillagepeople.co.nz

These events are great! You can buy chick feed so easily and having your own eggs is wonderful. We grew up with them...in mount Eden!
Chickhens are good for the soul and well being , even though they are a pain in the grass I would not be without them . They unlike us have not changed since the middle ages . My chickhens live in card board boxes filled with straw like dog keenls within the chicken house on cold winter nights protected from the cold .Good one Gail .
