New skatepark for Kingsland

Kingsland residents will soon get a new skate park at Nixon Park. The Albert-Eden local board has approved additional funds required to start construction of the skate park, which will be located at Nixon Park, just off Bond St.

Margi Watson, Albert-Eden board deputy chair, says that the board is excited that the project will go ahead.

“The skate park has been on the cards for a long time, and we’ve done a lot of planning and design prior to the super-city. This is a fantastic result for everyone, young and old, in the local community. It’s a huge asset to them,” she says.

Margi says that the skate park is expected to start construction soon and will be built by Christmas.

“It doesn’t take long to build, and it will be just in time for people to use during the holidays.”

The skate park is a legacy project originally approved by the then Eden/Albert community board. The board approved $395,000 for the skate park upgrade in March, but the amount needed rose to $455,000 after the project went out to tender. The design for Nixon skate park was approved by the community board in 2008.

  • Can you rollerblade here too?

  • Hi Linda. It is built for skateboarding but like most skateparks - you can can be use use a bike or a scooter on parts of it. It is probably too short a course for rollerblades. Check out Tamaki Drive instead! But give it a try - it should be open for use by Dec 20th!
